What is a typing speed test?

A typing speed test measures how many words per minute (WPM) you can type, along with your accuracy. KumaType generates a random stream of common words in your chosen language and times how quickly and correctly you can type them — no sign-up, no downloads, and nothing is sent to a server.

How KumaType calculates your WPM

WPM is calculated by dividing the number of correctly typed characters by 5 (the average length of a word), then dividing by the elapsed time in minutes. This is called net WPM. KumaType also shows your raw WPM, which counts every keystroke you make — including ones you later corrected — so you can see the gap between your top speed and your accurate speed.

5 tips to type faster and more accurately

  1. Don't look at the keyboard. Learn the home-row position and trust your fingers — glancing down breaks your rhythm.
  2. Slow down before you speed up. Consistency (a steady WPM with low variance) usually predicts long-term speed better than short, error-prone bursts.
  3. Fix your posture. Wrists level, screen at eye height — fatigue is a bigger speed-killer than most people expect.
  4. Practice in short, frequent sessions. Five 60-second tests a day beats one long session once a week.
  5. Track your accuracy, not just your WPM. A high WPM with low accuracy is slower in practice once you count the time spent correcting mistakes.

Practice typing in your own language

Most typing tests only support English. KumaType includes word sets for over 20 languages and scripts, so you can practice a typing test in Hindi, a typing speed test in Arabic, or a WPM test in Japanese, Korean, or Chinese — all in the same minimal interface.

Yes. Net WPM only counts correctly typed characters, so mistakes lower your score even if you type fast. Prioritizing accuracy usually produces a higher score over time.
